I think its appropriate for me to remember him here. I started wargaming with John in the late 1980s, and continued to do so during the following twenty years. Among a certain generation, particularly those organising shows, he was a well known character. As a wing-commander, retired, he was every bit a no-nonsense, forthright sort of bloke, and he wasn't acting the part. I liked him, and others have said that when he mentioned my name, it was positive. I will take that as a strong compliment. I suspect many visitors to shows all over England from 1980 to 2010 will have seen his historical refights, always involving thousands of 28mm figures, and in all periods of history. Recently spotted a photo in a Featherstone book with a Tuckey game featured. He later staged his own wargames show at Marston-Magna, Somerset, and I was pleased to put on a game at most if not all his shows. In his last few years he sold his collections and re-embraced model railways, but on occasions we did still speak. He was a powerful character, a British patriot, and I'm sad to know he is no longer with us. RIP John.

However, with this hot spell, I decided it would be a nice change to use up some spare card and wood dowel constructing a large log building, something to sit behind similar fortifications.

Thought I might be able to make something interesting out of it. Today I have de facto completed my Efim Nikonov submarine, originally designed in 1721. I point out it was only designed that year as it failed all its testing, and the Russian government scrapped its funding for this project. Hope you agree, however, if it had worked, it would have been a useful weapon against the Ottoman fleet operating in the Black Sea....... hope to find out soon!

New additions are four fixed artillery pieces. an improved deck layout, a ship's wheel, and a lot of brighter paintwork. While I love the idea of naval participation, I've no ambitions for owning larger 28mm ships, I'm not convinced a broadside from thirtyfive guns on a Frigate would enhance any wargame, but I can see some problems in storing the model, lol. But I might still add a couple more cannon to this vessel. Well, its time my Muscovites engaged the Ottoman/Tartar alliance.

I can't confirm the authenticity to this model but the idea that the Muscovite Command might have had a campaign coach seems plausible. The war-wagon is based on some late medieval ideas and can serve with either the Muscovites or the Ottomans. I'm satisfied with the Cossack light guns but the Tartar artillery is a bit boring, perhaps they need more interesting bases.

From about March this year, my health seems to have improved. It is now my hope to return to posting on several blogs, and to increase the actual number of wargames I stage. The first is a unit of spearmen in the service of Guido Bonacolsi, Captain General of Mantua, a supporter of the German Emperor. The second unit are Visconti Milanese, supporting the Papacy and France. Also included is the Emperor with a small unit of Imperial pikemen. Practically all these figures are modern, cheap Chinese imports. Painted up, they provide useful foot soldiers to serve with the W. Britains Herald knights.

The carriage has been altered, the barrel is made of plastic tubes, the axis is also plastic with a steel rod for added strength. The wheels were originally Playmobil ship's wheels I picked up in a charity shop. Miliput and some faux jewellery created the hubs. I think its come out quite nicely, and for a total cost of about £5.50. The gun crew are mainly Britains Herald figures, repainted and varnished. Still to decide whether to base this piece, or not.

Easily done, this work added so much to the Herald 54mm figures. The first unit are Milanese, but will also serve as English in other theatres. The second group, in yellow, will be attached to the Emperor's Ghibelline army. Only one bow was missing in these acquisitions and it was no great problem to drill the hand to accept some thick wire in its place, and I allowed myself a more authentic colour bow. Commanding the Milanese is a Britains Deetail knight, they do look the part as high ranking personnel. This collection is principally a restoration project, with occasional upgrading.

Fortunately, the plain shields lend themselves perfectly for more authentic heraldry to be painted on, and varnished for protection. Concerning the lances, made of plastic, they can be best described as unimpressive. I decided to apply my own. I cut away the original hand guards, and drilled them to accept steel rods which I already use for standard bearers in my 28mm armies. Additional hand guards were supplied by halving the beads of a neckless which belonged to my late mother, and they work perfectly in this role. I should record, two horses arrived broken from their bases. A steel nail was internally drilled, and then supper glued to provide a very secure join. Here are a few photos of those ready for service. The first shows Ghibelline cavalry, and then some Guelph cavalry. The final photo shows the poor state of the plastic lances, no point saving them in my opinion.

Keen to make use of them both, I thought combining them might make an interesting model. Have joined the torso to the legs of a cheap Chinese rider, added a spare buckler and sword scabbard, and nailed the whole to the pony. Having applied a coat of yacht varnish for protection, I think its a fun addition. By the way, the Airfix figure was a few millimetres less in height when placed next to the Britains Herald medieval figures, fine on the table, but not so good in the same unit.

With his surname being also similar to coglioni (testicles in Italian), this warrior knight decided to use a distinctive coat of arms. I'm rather pleased with this addition to my 54mm collection. Its a spare Herald Range knight, with a spare Swoppit Range horse, an unwanted Deetail Range saddle & Cloth, with an ornamental plume taken from a Crescent Range helmet. I also had to construct, and pin a replacement ear. There is something very pleasing about bringing odds and spares together to make something interesting. I have drilled and fixed a steel nail to ensure all is quite firmly together, just got to source out a suitable base.

Many of the castings were made in a steel (occasionally silver) coloured plastic which actually looks quite good. As a rule, its not my intention to radically replace the original 1970s artwork. Unfortunately, the paper-transfer shield designs rarely survive, but as these designs look more appropriate as comprehensive school blazer badges I have little incentive to keep them anyhow. Having taken care to prime just the cleaned shields, I have now painted on Guelph and Ghibelline designs belonging to Italian states and rulers. Many of these 1968-76 figures arrive with mismatched bases, or plastic sheet replacements, or no bases at all. I have sought to correct this irregularity with a general redistribution. Fortunately, the plastic sheet bases are a good, working alternative, and two units of Heralds now use this option. By the way, warped Herald bases will typically return to their correct shape if placed in hot water, and then rested on a cold surface. So here are some of the new, old Herald knights. I have only had one complete loss so far, an archer had probably been dipped into paint stripper and it had destroyed the integrity of the plastic, causing constant peeling. I must confirm, its been a real pleasure restoring these figures, and an even greater pleasure now owning once more some childhood toys.

These were actually a Christmas present for my Great Nephew. In the 1970s I had in turn inherited a handful of Britains knights and I remembered how colourful and impressive these figures looked. Restoring them was quite enjoyable, and I also began to contemplate how such figures could be employed on the wargames table. Even in my childhood I could discern the Britains varied in their design, that they had different designers. Indeed, that company has produced a fair number of medieval ranges since its founding in the 1890s. But for wargames, the figures produced during the period 1965-90 appear to be the most popular, comprising two collections; the DEETAIL RANGE, and the HERALD RANGE, and they are very different creations. The DEETAIL RANGE was made in England. They are typically robust figures, with heavy detail, simplistic painting, and metal bases. The historical accuracy can best be described as 'generous', all ages of medieval armour are often incorporated into a single figure. But they are popular, and very collectable. The HERALD RANGE was made in British Hongkong. They are slender in their casting, with a rushed painted finish, but superior coverage. The armour is surprisingly accurate, and this cannot be by chance. The Herald figures were much more limited in their number of castings and paint-variants, their bases are hard plastic. For me, however, their cavalry are vastly superior to the DEETAIL range. To put it another way, the DEETAIL range are toy knights used for wargames. While the HERALD range are well designed figures that can be used for historical collections, toys, or wargames, I hope that makes some sense. So, I am now collecting 54mm Herald figures, collecting, restoring, repairing, converting, and forming them up into wargaming units. This is not a long-term project, I want this collection completed within a few months, and I have already picked up several batches of figures. Here's a few photos of recent acquisitions.

It was a year ago that I purchased a wooden container in a charity shop for £1, and it was obvious the lid would be quite suitable for something eastern, and perfect for something Russian. The following photos are pretty well self-explanatory. The model is not strictly datable as it has features from several periods in Russian history, but as it was my intention for it to not only capture my interest in the history of Muscovy, but also my love of Christmas, I don't think it matters. The green roof is inspired by a Russian palace of the 17th century, the dome is very 16th century, the yellow walls are 18th century, the wooden ornaments are Medieval, and together it makes a very colourful ornament on the war-games table. Additional costs include £3 for the yellow paint, and £2 for the patterned glass, which was taken from a broken lantern in a charity shop. With glue and other paints, it cost a total of £7. Being pleased with the results, I was able to cast-up some Orthodox Christian crosses to finish the project. For the record, working on and off, I completed this model at 11.45am today, being New Years Day. Hope you all had a great Christmas, and have a happy New Year!

With appropriate shields and a new green banner, they now form a sixteen figure strong unit of Lesser Boyars, or possibly Druzhina. For war-game purposes, I will classify this unit as less armoured when compared to the higher class Boyars (nobles). I include a photo of the latter as they too have gained a new orange coloured banner. The Cumans are Essex Miniatures, and I'm pleased with the castings, they mix perfectly with my Hinchcliffe Muscovites.

(ps. its a bit difficult to take photos presently as the table is covered in an on-going AWI war-game with a member of my family.)

The whole lot delivered came to £35, a real bargain. Only one mounted figure turned out to be a lost cause, and two horses needed paint stripping. Most of the others were bare metal, and in excellent condition. The Pechenegs have now been painted up and based, and have received a Cossack banner with an appropriate design of a composite bow. These figures are really quite useful, they can serve as Balkan tribes, Byzantine allies, early Cossacks, medieval Hungarians, the list goes on. Several more Byzantine and armoured Arabs have been drafted into the Muscovite Boyar horse archers, and they now muster two units of eight. All these figures are based as skirmishers.

Some time ago I purchased a bag of common CHINESE plastic knights. To be honest, I did not think much of them, while the sergeants were fair, the fully armoured were poor, and all needed additional basing. So I decided to purchase, off Ebay, some 1970s BRITAINS, to form the basis of a gift to my Grandnephew, Young Oliver. Now the latter castings arrived needing new weapons fortunately, replacements are available. Job done!
Subsequently, in a charity shop, I purchased a single plastic knight for 20p. This turned out to be a 1960s SOLID TIMPO, and I really enjoyed restoring this figure. Also picked up for a total of 80p two lead mounted knights, and I could tell these were old. They are CRESCENT figures and date to the early 1950s. I will only carry out a slight restoration, where necessary, as these are very rare.
Well, I've painted and based the best of the CHINESE figures, and they aren't bad, I will add them to the superb BRITAINS. And now, having just arrived, a box of twenty 1960s CRESCENT plastic knights seeking restoration. For reasons unknown, I was the only bidder and picked them up for a delivered total of £5, they normally go for somewhat more. This has been a fun diversion from my 28mm war-games figures, and I love giving the painted a gloss varnish. Note, BRITAINS, CRESCENT, and SOLID TIMPO were all made in England.

Most had no flash whatsoever and only faint mould lines. Unfortunately, the painted horses did have some tough resin-like glue on their bases and also where the saddle would have been affixed. Removing this stuff led to some bare metal and I was obliged to spray prime these areas, but these horses are now looking good. Not bad for a single day's work. Looking through the horses, I can now assess which looks best with what figures. And I can also see how these castings will form new units, or be drafted into others. The Cuman helmeted figures came with a sock holding two throwing spears, I won't need these weapons for my planned Lesser Boyars (sixteen strong) but nor will I put them in the melting pot as they will be easy to convert into useful quivers. The Pechenegs will become Cossack horse archers (mustering twelve) and the Ebay purchase included enough step ponies for this unit. The remaining eleven figures have all found homes in some of my established cavalry formations, being able to draw on spare horses already painted and based.

As a footnote, I spotted these two lead 54mm medieval knights in a charity shop toy bin, costing only 40p each. I believe they date back to the 1950s or even earlier. Would like to find out more about these figures before any decisions on whether to restore them, its a project for the future.

Picked up a load of Essex figures and horses for the delivered total of £35. The figures are a mixture of Cumans, Pechenegs, and a few heavily armoured Byzantines and arabs. They came with a full range of horses, many of which arrived with some enhancing paintwork. In my estimation, the Pechenegs would not look out of place as early Cossack horse archers, while the armoured Cumans will make some useful Muscovite Druzhina or lesser Boyars. Some of the others can serve as standard bearers, or drafted into my Tartar horde.

Costing £23.00 from a seller on Ebay, I have just picked up this small unit of 17th century cuirassiers. These will now serve as Swedish or Muscovite cavalry, as required. Now I have no intention of repainting or altering these 'Warrior?'castings as they were previously part of Stuart Asquith's collection. I've been inspired since the 1970s by this gentleman's wargaming books and articles, I even briefly corresponded with him in the 1980s, so I am VERY pleased to now have this unit of cavalry in my collection.

In their green coats are the Preobrazhenski Guards c.1700, still wearing streltsy type uniforms. The 1st Moscow Streltsy have gained an additional twelve figures, making a total of thirty (1,500 men). Some spare figures have been formed into a small garrison unit and given light-red coats, they carry a Novgorod flag. While the blue streltsy unit continues as a baggage guard, they have now received a Pskov flag. This makes seven streltsy regiments for the field army with a further two smaller units serving in a reserve capacity. Surely now there is enough to take on the Tartar-Ottoman alliance.

Pleased to have completed eighteen musketeers for my second 'German' regiment serving the Muscovite State. Being mercenaries, however, you will not be surprised to know I have some alternative command bases (just waiting for their flags), so these two regiments might just find themselves serving the King of Sweden. What do you expect, they are mercenaries!
Also, my Muscovite baggage train has gained an artillery limber, and several civilian drivers have been newly employed.

Thought they might serve as Eastern European sergeants if integrated with other castings. Hinchcliffe produce a similar figure described as 'Polish retinue', so I decided to purchase ten figures and increase this unit to sixteen. Here are a few photos showing the end result, I note that Gripping Beast also list several Russian crossbowmen styled 'city militia', might like to get a few.

However, have completed two flags for my Muscovite 'German' mercenary regiments. A suitable 'imaginary' banner for my Khazar heavy cavalry. The Czar's banner is now carried by the Guard cavalry. And I had some fun casting and converting this Orthodox priest, and mounting it on a spare horse from that batch of second-hand figures recently purchased. Expect some campaign news very shortly.
